I wrote my bachelor's thesis in Media Technology on “quality TV series”. The concept of episode-based formats goes back to the 1950s where television sets first became available for the masses. But it was only in the 1980s that some directors took new paths: plots gained in complexity, characters became more interesting and visually, TV series looked a lot more "cinematic". The term “quality television” emerged. Meanwhile, they became a widespread phenomenon, are subject of heated debates everywhere and are often the driving sales arguments behind the many streaming platforms.
But what exactly lies behind the term? What are the characteristics and distinguishing features a show has to meet to become a “quality series”? Following a historic overview and definitions of terms centred around television series, this paper approaches quality television through exemplary TV series and differentiates this genre from other television formats through exegesis of subject-specific literature.
